The monsoon is a rain-bearing system that hits India in the post-summer months. Bringing rains that are the prime source of irrigation for vast swathes of India’s farmlands, the monsoon is crucial for the country where agriculture has significant bearings on the country’s economic health. Among the most immediate and worrying fallouts of a bad monsoon year is the deaths of farmers – many of whom are heavily in debt -- who kill themselves if their harvests fail to ripen.
