Muslims, the largest minority in India, account for 14.2% (17.22 crore) of the country’s 1.25-billion-strong population, according to census data released earlier this year. A study by Pew Research Center says India will overtake Indonesia as the country with the largest Muslim population by 2050. The Muslim vote is a major factor in Indian politics, with polarisation of voters emerging as a key issue before elections. While the opposition Congress and other ‘secular’ parties accuse the ruling BJP of encouraging religious intolerance and polarising the populace along communal lines, many leaders from the right-wing camp charge their detractors with blatant minority appeasement for vote bank politics.
