With two Formula 1 Grands Prix under its belt and representatives in F1 and the World Endurance championship, India seems to have a reasonable foothold in four-wheel circuit racing.
However, financial constraints prompted S Sarath Kumar, the country's first participant during a MotoGP weekend to drop out of Mahindra Racing's campaign in the Italian motorcycle racing championship this July.
The 20-year-old rider from Chennai is not taking this setback lying down, however, and has returned to Bangalore-based Ten10 Racing to plan a comeback to international racing.
"Depending on our budget we are looking at a campaign in either the Italian, Japanese or Spanish national championships," Kumar told HT.
"These are championships from where the top riders of the world emerge so any of these would be ideal."
Kumar is being watchful, however, of the value he will get out of a campaign in either of these championships.
"We have to see what sort of a deal we will get," said Kumar.
"Things like training, practice, spares especially suspension changes make a big difference in how your season goes."
Kumar has also kept busy riding in the FMSCI two-wheeler national championship. He is also hopeful that one of the various categories will feature as a support race to the second round of the World Superbike Championship (WSBK) that is scheduled to be held at the Buddh International Circuit in March next year.
"If the federation (FMSCI) is planning to hold something like the CBR 250 series as a support round I would definitely try to take part in it," said Kumar.
Speaking to HT, FMSCI president Vicky Chandhok stated that while it had not been decided which category would support the WSBK round there would definitely be at least one support race to the main event.
