Americans are the stereotype of the "ugly American" when they travel, a new survey has revealed.

According to USA Today, the survey, which was carried out by LivingSocial and Mandala Research, polled 5,600 respondents from five countries - 4,000 of whom were Americans and other respondents were in Australia, Canada, Ireland and the United Kingdom.

The survey also revealed that four in 10 U.S. survey-takers said they'd stolen something - mostly towels and bathrobes, while other popular items taken included pillows, remote controls, Bibles and sheets, Fox News reported.

The most common vacation disasters, according to American respondents, were lost luggage on an airline, bad weather and getting lost.

The world's worst tourists according to the survey are:

U.S. - 20 percent

China - 15 percent

France - 14 percent

Japan - 12 percent

Russia - 11 percent

Korea - 9 percent

India - 9 percent

Germany - 8 percent

Spain - 7 percent

Britain - 5 percent
