Highlight Story

There seems to be no stopping those Angry Birds and their quest for global domination.

The Finnish company Rovio Entertainment, creators of the Angry Birds mobile game and merchandise, says it will be opening theme parks and retail outlets across China over the next 12 months - and that its new game is being designed with the Chinese audience in mind.

The Angry Birds theme parks are being built in Haining, in the southeastern Zhejiang province, and within the Sino-Finnish Centre at Shanghai's Tongji University and are both expected to be opened in the third quarter of this year.

The parks will promote "healthy, active and educational play," according to a company spokesman, and will feature Angry Birds-themed rides and cafes.

First retail stores outside of Finland

Shanghai will also be home to the first Angry Birds retail outlet outside Finland when the shop opens its doors on July 3, with another outlet scheduled to open in Beijing a week later. Rovio claims it will have outlets opened in 100 Chinese cities within the next 12 months.

Just how much the Chinese audience figures in Rovio's plans is reflected also in the fact that the company says the its next game, Amazing Alex, has incorporated "quite a few Chinese elements.

Amazing Alex is set for release in July.
