Bansko in Bulgaria offers the cheapest skiing in Europe, according to a new study by TripAdvisor released December 13.

The resort was named Europe's best value ski destination by the travel review giant, which studied the costs associated with a skiing trip to 30 destinations across Europe.

Calculating the combined cost of one night's hotel accommodation, one day's ski pass, one day's basic ski rental, a local meal and a bottle of beer (and converting the local currency to pounds), it established that a ski break in Bansko would cost just £108.59 (€128.90).

Compare that to the most expensive resort on the list, St Moritz, in Switzerland, and the difference is shocking, at almost four times more (£405.08/€480.85).

A trip to Italy's Mount Etna was second cheapest at £117.73 (€139.75) and Germany's Berchtesgaden took third with £150.31 (€178.42) -- looking at the overall results, Andorra and Germany seem to offer some of the best values, each with three destinations in the ten cheapest.

Switzerland claimed all three most expensive spots, however, with Zermatt following St. Moritz at £398.95 (€473.57) and Gstaad coming in at £390.29 (€463.29).

Although conventional wisdom holds that the Alps are the most expensive place for a winter break, TripAdvisor said it's not always true.

Even within the expensive Alps region, there are pockets of value to be found," said the firm's Emma Shaw.

"Serre Chevalier in France has been identified as a savvy option for the more cost-sensitive skiers."
