Located north of the Dominican Republic and east of Cuba, Providenciales is a little paradise in the Caicos archipelago, part of the Turks and Caicos Islands, a British Overseas Territory. According to the 2015 Travelers' Choice Awards, this idyllic retreat is considered the most beautiful island in the world.
With its turquoise water and white sand, Providenciales is a paradise that took some time to be discovered. Long avoided due to its lack of potable water, this island in the northern Caribbean Sea only began to welcome tourists recently. Today, its beauty is well known, to the point of placing first in the Travelers Choice Awards 2015. It placed second in 2014.
The award is based on an algorithm that takes into account the quantity and quality of opinions and comments on hotels, restaurants and attractions from around the world over a 12-month period.
The Caribbean, a concentration of beauty
The Caribbean is filled with stunning islands. This popular destination also features in third place on the list with Roatán, the largest of Honduras' Bay Islands. A destination that appears to be gaining in visits, as it didn't figure on last year's list.
Meanwhile, to visit the world's second most beautiful island, you'll need to head to the Pacific Ocean, to Hawaii. Maui is the second biggest island making up this US state's archipelago.
The rest of the top spots include the usual suspects of honeymoon destinations. Ko Tao in Thailand is in fifth place, Bali in Indonesia came in seventh, Mauritius in eighth and Bora Bora in ninth.
Europe's only island in the top ten is Greece's Santorini.
