'At the moment, I don’t need a man'
Roshmila Bhattacharya in a tete' a tete' with Shweta Tiwari about her new soap Jaane Kya..., which will soon be seen on Colors...tv Updated: Dec 03, 2008 17:42 IST
Shweta Tiwari in a tell-all conversation with Roshmila Bhattacharya...
Your new show Jaane Kya Baat Hui, has you getting involved in an extra-marital affair with a younger guy.
Let’s not get sensational. Jaane Kya.. is basically about a woman who discovers that her husband is cheating on her. In our society, a man can sleep around but if a woman confesses to having a male friend, all hell breaks loose. It’s so hypocritical!
Does Jaane Kya.. have shades of Kasauti Zindagi Kay?
I’ve never wanted to repeat myself. That’s why when Kasauti.. wound up after seven years, I didn’t sign up for another soap because every other female lead had a jhalak of Prerna. But not Aradhana Sareen.
With Kasauti..,Kahaani Ghar Ghar kii and Kyunki Saas bhi Kabhi Bahu thi ending, is it goodbye to prime time bahus?
If that were true, Balika Vadhu wouldn’t have been a hit. After two-three years, all shows start to drag. Kasauti.. was an exception because Prerna went through so many different stages. From sister, daughter and lover to wife, mother, saas, dadi and even pardadi. My friends were shocked when after the third 20-year-leap I agreed to play a great-grandmother. But at 80, I saw the story returning to the same Anurag-Prerna-Bajaj love triangle, I lost interest. Still, thank God, Kasauti.. shut down before viewers started saying, “Bhagwan, bandh karo!”
There was no master plan. I liked dancing, so I accepted Nach Baliye 2, Yeh Hai Jalwa, and Jalwa 4 2 ka 1. I even judged Aajaa Mahi Vay and learnt to spot weaknesses in a performance.
Jalwa 4 2 ka 1 is believed to be ending prematurely?
I’ve heard the rumours too but the producer hasn’t confirmed anything. The recession could affect some shows but new ones will come up. The show must go on, right?
Aren’t you planning to produce a daily soap too?
Yes, soaps which are close to life, yet don’t leave you with a sense of déjà vu. I’ve already produced a Bhojpuri film, Hamaar Saiyan Hindustani, with Raja (ex-husband Raja Chaudhary), and some ads.
What about more films?
(Laughs) For that I need lots of money.
I meant acting. We’ve seen you in Dahek, Madhoshi, Aabra Ka Dabra..
(Cuts in) Those were for friends. But I may have some good news soon.
On the day of the terror attacks, Raja was partying with friends. Where were you?
I was at Kanjur Marg, shooting. We usually pack up by 11 but on the advice of a police inspector friend, we stayed back. My co-star Sanjit Bedi stays just behind the Taj, and we didn’t want him heading home. We continued shooting, then went up to the studio owner’s office and switched on the TV. What we saw was so terrifying that work came to a standstill. I eventually returned home at 8.30 am. Fortunately, my daughter Palak slept through it all. She woke up late and was upset she couldn’t go to school till I explained what was happening. Then, she wanted to bring home the orphaned baby Moshe thinking he would be happy with her and our puppy.
Did you watch Bigg Boss 2?
Some repeats, over the weekend. Other days, by the time I get home, it’s close to midnight and I didn’t want to disturb my daughter who has to be up early.
It sparked off many controversies. It also got the highest TRPs. If people had problems with the show, why did they watch it? Would you ever enter the House?
I don’t think I’ll ever be completely free of commitments.
Will Raja benefit from being in the public eye for three months?
Everyone should learn from their experiences and Raja is not a young boy. I wish him well.
Any chances of reconciliation?
At the moment I don’t need a male partner, period.
