Though the channel refused to comment, Fazila Allana, the owner of Sol Productions, the production company that managed and ran the show for two seasons, admits that the show will return. However, Allana refused divulge details regarding the month and date.
“The plan for Koffee With Karan is in place,” she agrees. “Everyone associated with the show is really excited. It will be aired on Star World for sure but we still have to co-ordinate the dates for the shoots and fix on D-day. I can assure you, we’ll be back before the year ends.”
A source close to Johar says that the first meeting with the channel is scheduled after the filmmaker returns from his holiday in the US.
“He is headed for Los Angeles and expected to return only after three weeks, a few days before or after his birthday on May 25. Only after that, will the production house and the channel start co-ordinating the dates with the celebs who are expected to appear on the show. There’s still a lot of time before we go on air, and that would only be in the last quarter,” adds the source.
The show’s first season went on air in 2004, on November 19, and ended on May 27, 2005, because Johar was committed to direct his next film, Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna, that released in mid-2006.
After a break of two years, the show kicked off with the second season on February 11, 2007, and ended on September 16, 2007, with a Koffee With Karan Awards. Johar was expected to start working on his next film as a director, My Name Is Khan, that released in February this year.
The first season was huge success, and the show became the first English entertainment package ever to get really high ratings in India. Abhishek Bachchan and Preity Zinta’s episode was the highest viewed episode in Season One.
Talks are on for Season Three and buzz is that Johar’s buddy Shah Rukh Khan may flag off the show this time too. Johar has wrapped up his shoot for the Hindi chat show, Lift Kara De, on Sony Entertainment. He shot the last episode with Akshay Kumar till 6 am on Wednesday, April 28. Soon after, he flew off for his holiday to the US.
The Lie-O-Meter Johar used a bleep, that he called the Lie-O-Meter, to indicate that he thinks the guest is lying. The Lie-O-Meter was mostly used in Season One.
Sometimes the episodes featured a segment in which the guest was acquainted with the general public or industry’s opinions about about him or her.
Johar asked a volley of questions. The guests had to answer with the first thing that came to mind. The one with the wittiest replies took home a coffee hamper!
