It is the dream of every TV actor to create a memorable character. However, Ali Asgar, who plays Dadi on the show, Comedy Nights with Kapil, has a bit of an odd problem. His character has become so popular that it’s become difficult to handle it. “It’s great to be loved for your work, but now it seems Dadi has overshadowed Ali,” he says.

Recently, when a procession headed for Ganesh visarjan in the city spotted the actor, they cajoled him into dancing like his character. “I was stuck in traffic behind a truck. When the people on the truck saw me, they first gave me Prasad, and then emotionally blackmailed me into dancing.”

While Ali is happy that Dadi’s character is much-loved, he hopes to retain his identity as an actor. When asked if he feels that the show is becoming repetitive, he says, “Everyone will repeat some bits. Even in TV serials, characters end up doing the same thing. However, Dadi’s energy, dance and her drinking habit are loved a lot. We have to maintain the tone of the character (sic), yet give something new so as to not bore the audience.” He also says that at times he repeats certain things on popular demand. “After I kissed Hrithik (Roshan), the studio audience asked why I didn’t kiss Ranbir (Kapoor; the episode is yet to air).”

Ali is currently also playing the lead in another comedy show, Jeanie Aur Juju.
