From July 10, Channel [V] will venture into the world of youth sitcoms, with its first fiction show. Roomies is a show about five 20-somethings from different walks of life, living under the same roof.
Says the channel’s GM, Prem Kamath, “Our channel identified a set of areas to focus on called hot spots or hot buttons. Relationship-based shows have worked well on our channel, so we wanted to work on those lines.
As long as its entertaining, it doesn’t matter whether its fiction, non-fiction or a documentary.” Kamath says that [V] had been considering the option of a fiction show for a while now, and were waiting for the right concept. “We didn’t want a high intensity TV drama.
Roomies is a real sitcom, which is why it is a one hour weekly show, instead of a daily.” The cast of Roomies is largely fresh, and stars Nakul Grover, Nidhi Oza, Mrinal Dutt, Suzana Mukherjee and Smaran Sahu.
A couple of actors though have been reality show contestants on [V]’s rival channels. Mukherjee was a contestant on MTV’s Roadies while Sahu was on the same channel’s Making The Cut.
But Kamath downplays that, saying it was unintentional. “We have cast the actors purely on their acting,” he says. Kamath also says that the show isn’t looking to be sensational, though one of the first few episodes is based on an MMS scandal.
“All these issues are relevant to youngsters. Our core group is 15-24; we don’t even pretend to be a family channel,” he asserts. Kamath doesn’t get into details but promises that more fictional shows are in the offing.
