Family Guy joked about Kevin Spacey hiding kidnapped kids in his basement in this 2005 viral clip. Did they know?
Seth MacFarlane and Family Guy’s 2005 joke about Kevin Spacey hiding kidnapped children in his basement has taken a dark meaning after the recent sexual harassment allegations. But did they know?
A short clip from the animated show Family Guy, in which a character seemingly insinuates that Kevin Spacey has dark secrets, is going viral. In the four-second clip, Stewie Griffin, one of the show’s central characters, is seen yelling “Help! I’ve escaped from Kevin Spacey’s basement!”
It hasn’t been confirmed if this was indeed a jab at the recent sexual harassment allegations against the House of Cards star, and it could be a joke at the expense of the many psychopathic characters Spacey has played on screen.
Coincidentally, Seth MacFarlane, the creator of Family Guy, was involved in a similar situation in the wake of the Harvey Weinstein scandal. While hosting the 2013 Oscars, MacFarlane had joked that actresses would no longer have to pretend that Weinstein was attractive. MacFarlane later said that he had been made aware of the disgraced movie mogul’s behaviour by a friend and colleague, and the joke was an intentional swipe.
In the days since actor Anthony Rapp alleged that Spacey made sexual advances on him while he was minor, Netflix, the streaming service behind House of Cards, announced that it would be cancelling the programme after its sixth season, the production of which had also been indefinitely halted as more investigations are conducted.
In a widely criticised apology, Spacey said that he didn’t remember the incident, and blamed alcohol. He also announced that he has been living ‘as a gay man’.
