Music Ka Maha Muqabla

two years ago, Star Plus is now gearing up for

Comedy Ka Maha Muqabla

, a funny reality show. Reliance Big Productions is helming the show that features Bollywood faces like Raveena Tandon Thadani, Shekhar Suman and Arshad Warsi. The structure of the show is similar to that of

Music Ka Maha Muqabla

, where each team of singers had a mentor who doubled up as a judge for other teams.

The show, unlike

Comedy Circus

on Sony Entertainment, won’t have comedians working in duos or trios, but as individual performers. They will also be part of teams headed by Thadani, Suman and Warsi. The show is expected to occupy a weekend slot.

When asked whether they were taking on Sony’s comedy show, Anupam Vasudev, executive vice president, marketing, Star Plus, insists that Star was the first to introduce comedy on the small screen.

“The new show doesn’t aim to compete with other comedy shows on air, though choices are always welcomed by the audience,” he says, adding, “Song, dance and humour are genres that always have shows launching in groups, with a gap of one or two weeks between them. Sometimes, they’re even on the same weekend, sharing a time slot. Even as we talk,

(both dance shows) are on air almost simultaneously on competing channels.”

Vasudev mentions that after Star One introduced

Laughter Challenge

, several other comedy shows appeared on almost every channel. “With multiple shows in new and popular genres, the audience will benefit because they’ll have options to choose from. And the best shows will survive,” he points out.

Comedy Ka Maha Muqabla

goes on floors early next month, and will be broadcast a couple of weeks later. Comedians have already started their in-house rehearsals.
