Most people would remember Gauri Pradhan as Nandini Virani, the character she played on the iconic show, Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi, till 2008.
A year later, after the birth of her twins, the actor took a break. Now, as she returns to TV after a hiatus of five years, we speak to her about her role of a mother to a teenager on the show Meri Aashiqui Tumse Hi and her rapport with Ekta Kapoor, among other things.
After becoming a parent, most women have to make the difficult decision of either continuing with working or taking a break. Did you face this dilemma?
I didn’t face any such dilemma. I was sure that I wanted to spend time with my kids for at least the first few years. Looking back, I feel that was the most joyous time of my life, and I wouldn’t swap it for anything. Now I feel they are old enough, so I can get back to work.
Were you apprehensive about taking up the role of a mother to a teenager?
Nowadays, 15-16-year-old kids are becoming actors, so what do you expect? I have worked in the industry for 10 years, so I’m okay with playing a mother. As long as the character is interesting and I don’t have to look like an 80-year-old, I’m fine.
What are the changes you’ve noticed in the TV industry in the last five years?
Newcomers don’t sustain for long. There is a high level of burnout too….Everyone wants to be an actor, and competition is stiff.
We heard you have a lot of hobbies. Tell us more about them.
I love to paint and I’m learning Spanish too. I want to pursue a masters course in the language, and also want to settle in Spain with my family — that’s my dream. Apart from that, I enjoy doing up houses as a hobby. I’ve designed a friend’s house and I’m currently working on another friend’s home. I can’t keep redoing mine every year, so this is the best way to enjoy my hobby. I might turn into a full-time interior designer.
Do your kids watch Hiten and you on TV?
They aren’t allowed to watch TV, but they do know what their father does. They have watched an episode of his show and I will show them one of mine too. That’s it. Once, I even took them to the sets for them to understand what shooting is.
