After bringing in star judges like Govinda and Katrina Kaif to push the TRPs, Hrithik Roshan’s debut show, Just Dance on Star Plus, has roped in half a dozen TV actors to promote the top six contestants.
Sushant Singh Rajput, Neha Marda, Sayantani Ghosh, Mouni Roy and Shaleen Bhanot were among those who participated. Eventually, almost a dozen celebrities ended up being featured in the episode.
However, it’s not a novel concept for a dance show, although the channel claims otherwise. In December, Madhuri Dixit’s show, Jhalak Dikkhlaa Jaa 4 on Sony Entertainment had roped in more than a dozen celebrities to promote their participants. But there were two differences, it was the show’s opening episode, and most celebrities were from Bollywood. A few weeks later, for a particular round,
involving trios, a bunch of TV faces were roped in too.
Earlier, Zee TV’s Dance India Dance, had TV and Bollywood actors promoting contestants in the last stages as well, although they barely knew the participants.
When asked if the obvious inspiration would easily be noticed by viewers, Monica Shergill, senior creative director, Star Plus, defends the connect, “This particular episode is crucial because it was the decider for the semi-finalists. I wouldn’t say that we have been inspired by other shows because the celebrities and contestants didn’t know each other from before.” She adds, “Our stars were generous enough to give us a lot of time for rehearsals. It was to bring out the best in our contestants. As for getting TRPs, we’ve only focused on creative work. Fortunately, we have enough ideas of our own to sustain.”
