After making a mark as an item girl in the Hindi and Bhojpuri film industries, Sambhavna Seth now wants to expand her repertoire. The actor wants to do away with the item girl tag that has come to be associated with her name. She is keen on trying her hand at acting in Hindi TV serials and would like to be part of the next season of Nach Baliye with her boyfriend. In this candid chat, Sambhavna talks about her image in the industry, her issues with Rakhi Sawant and her view on live-in relationships.
Tell us about your relationship with Avinash Dwivedi.
I’ve known him for three years now. I was his mentor during a dance reality show on a Bhojpuri channel. But, we began dating only a year-and-a-half ago. He really looked after me when I was unwell, and that’s how we bonded. He’s an actor and is trying his luck without my help in Mumbai. He’s got two ads already. I’m proud that he’s doing it on his own. He’s a simple person, just the kind I wanted to be with. I might have done bold item songs, but my upbringing and values are traditional.
We hear that you are in a live-in relationship with him?
I had thought of it, but I’m not. I don’t give two hoots about society, but I can do anything for my parents. I didn’t want to upset them… I’ve never had link-ups or affairs.
Would you say your claim to fame was Bigg Boss?
I was already a popular star in Bihar. I am addressed as Bhojpuri ki Helen (Helen of Bhojpuri) in that part of the country. But Bigg Boss gave me all-India recognition. Though it got me a lot of work, it also associated me with various controversial people like Rakhi Sawant. I’ve known her for years. Unlike me, she never thinks about family values. People think I’m a badass, which I’m not. I’m a fun-loving person. I am misunderstood because I am blunt.
But you are temperamental.
I get angry only if someone instigates me. I am funny and childish too. On Bigg Boss, I was shown shouting at others, but not why I was provoked.
Do you think the item girl tag is hindering your career growth?
Earlier, I used to feel bad about that, but not anymore. More than anything else, it hurts when people think that I’m a controversial person. I started my career with an acting role years ago, but my dancing skills got noticed and I got item songs. I didn’t know people would tag me as an item girl. I get offers to play lead roles in Bhojpuri films, but I don’t take them up as Bhojpuri is not my mother tongue. I’d love to do a daily soap and prove myself as an actor. I’m shy to ask for work. I would be equally comfortable in essaying a positive or a negative role.
A question you have been asked numerous times?
People ask me why I only get dance numbers and not acting roles. It gets tough to explain the ways of the industry.
A question you don’t want to answer ever?
Was Bigg Boss scripted? This question irritates me.
A show you think is successful?
An actor you feel is popular?
Drashti Dhami. She is pretty and a good actor. I like Rashami Desai as well.
A disturbing trend on TV.
The saas-bahu shows which have become a trend and every serial has that aspect.
What themes would you like TV programmes to touch upon?
A show about real women and not the fictional ones about pativrata, saas-bahu.
