After so many years in the industry, would you say you’ve got your due?
Well, I am still here, working in 24 and then with Irrfan in an international production, Qissa, and I am doing some of the best work available. So yes, I would say I have.
You worked on a few TV serials, like Astitava and Kahaani Ghar Ghar Ki, but never stuck to one fiction show. But how do you manage films and TV?
In the last decade, I haven’t done TV except for hosting or doing non-fiction shows. That was a conscious choice as I wasn’t terribly impressed with the content on TV. I don’t work on things I can’t relate to. As for films, other than Taare Zameen Par (2007) and Dil Toh Baccha Hai Ji (2011), I’ve done a few films every year. It’s very ambitious to do work you believe in. I would rather work my way than follow the trend.
Though you are the grand-niece of writer Khushwant Singh, you never speak much about him. Was that a conscious decision?
I think one should stand on one’s own two feet. The family you come from shouldn’t matter. It won’t make me a better actor. I don’t talk much about them and, anyway, I am a bit media-shy.
Are there plans to start a family?
My husband (Captain Sanjay Chopra) and I are planning to adopt a baby. We have set the process in motion. When and how it happens will depend on when the universe bestows this gift upon us. I am ready to be a mom.
