Ex-cricketer Navjot Singh Sidhu may have managed to tickle the funny bone of television audiences across the country with his convoluted description of situations and people, but the spirited Sardar has recently said something that not many cricket fans will find funny. On reality show Bigg Boss Season 6, Sidhu has confessed to cheating while playing international cricket.
“Haan, in Sharjah maine Courtney Walsh ka catch boundary rope main pakda tha aur hum woh match jeet gaye the,” Sidhu has said in reply to a question put to him during a lie detector test in the Bigg Boss House. This, when he was asked if he had ever cheated during his international career spanning 18 years. “International career mein aapne kabhi beimani ki hai?” Bigg Boss asked.
The cricketer-turned-politician, who is among the most popular contestants on the show was however quick to add, “But I am repentant.” In his statement Singh meant that Walsh was falsely dismissed in the match where Singh had actually taken the catch after crossing the boundary line, and eventually India won that match. While the revelation may have come as a shock to many Indian fans, the cricketing fraternity is divided on Sherry Paaji’s shocker.
While some believe it’s part of the game, others feel it was an unethical thing to do. “If he did it unknowingly it’s still pardonable, but if he knew it and yet kept quiet then it’s an unpardonable offence,” says Singh’s ex-colleague and cricketer Kirti Azad. “It’s his life and I don’t think there is a need to comment on this,” says Bishen Singh Bedi, taking a neutral stance.

Ex-cricketer Atul Wassan, however, feels that it’s no big deal as there’re always such “grey areas” in sports. “All this is a part of the game. We all do it. It’s nothing new, such things happen everyday,” says Wassan in support of ‘Sixer Sidhu’ who seems to have got clean bowled this time around.
