Actor Shivaji Satam, who plays ACP Pradyuman on TV show CID, is the exact opposite of his on-screen character. Bring up a ‘Daya, darwaza todo’ joke or the fact that his character has been an ACP for 16 years now, and Satam laughs out loud. “I don’t think my character will get a promotion, because if that happens, I’ll have to sit in office. ACP Pradyuman wants to go out in the field and work. So, those wondering why ACP hasn’t got a promotion, this is the reason,” he says. And yes, he reads all the jokes fans post online.

“My nephew is in college and he keeps showing me all the jokes..they are all very funny. I had a compilation of around 100 jokes on my phone, but recently I lost it. However, I still remember my favourites — there is one where the ACP’s face has been morphed on the statue of liberty and his fingers are moving. Alongside, there is a blurb, ‘Kucch toh gadbad hai Daya’.”

The show recently completed 1000 episodes, and Satam says that he never saw it coming. “I knew the show will become very popular and it will run for at least two-three years, but I never expected this. It has truly been a momentous journey,” he says. When he goes out, fans don’t call him by his real name, but refer to him as ‘ACP Pradyuman’. “They all show lot of respect and call me ACP Saahab. That’s the image. It’s wonderful,” he says.

The on-camera relationship between the characters-Abhijit (played by Aditya Shrivastav) and Daya (played by Dayanand Shetty) extends to real life as well. “We are like a band of brothers, like an extended family,” he says.
