The last time she appeared on TV, she was challenging her fears on Khatron Ke Khiladi Season Two with Akshay Kumar as the host. And now, she’s entered the Bigg Boss House. But the difference this time, is that Sonika Kaaliraaman is pregnant. The wrestler, who has popularised the sport among women in north Indian states like Haryana and Uttar Pradesh, is due to deliver between the last weeks of December and first week of January, and at the moment, has just entered her third trimester.
This is not the first time that the broadcaster and the production house have experimented with the weird. Last season, actor Ali Merchant tied the knot with his then-girlfriend, actor Sara Khan. However, the marriage, marred by hundreds of controversies, didn’t even last two months, with the couple calling it quits even before the season ended. However, Colors, the channel airing the show, got what it was looking for - TRPs.
This time, minutes before entering the House, Sonika says she’s neither afraid nor anxious. "These are feelings my husband will relate with because I’ve not had a great first trimester; I was throwing up all the time. I’m entering the House to inspire other women in the country to be brave enough to jhelo (bear) all the politics and dirt around them, and still enjoy every bit of their pregnancy. My family, my in-laws, even my husband felt that it’s scary to do a TV show at this point in life," says Sonika, adding, "But I think it’s the right time to get into the House and show other women how they can manage to work while they’re pregnant." This is not the first time that the broadcaster and the production house have experimented with the weird.
Ask about her fee, given the duality of the situation, and she replies, "I can just say we had a satisfactory deal. They’ve promised me medical check-ups, gynecological help and complete care throughout my stay. Besides, I’m going to try, and really hope to stay on the show for as long as I can. Imagine, I’ll be the first woman to deliver on a TV show. Isn’t that inspiring?"
Marriage, baby… what next?
During the last season of the show, actor Sara Khan was seen getting ‘up, close and personal’ with fellow contestant, actor Ashmit Patel. Watching the ‘action’ inside, Sara’s fiancé, actor Ali Merchant, entered the house as a guest and eventually stayed on till he married Sara on prime time TV. It was the first time a couple wed on a TV show. Their wedding was marred by religious controversies, and the marriage didn’t last, though the channel recorded high TRPs.
