From Kareena Kapoor Khan in the recent hit ‘Mera naam Mary’ to Katrina Kaif in ‘Chikni Chameli’, several Bollywood actors have gyrated to the beats of choreographer Ganesh Acharya. Bollywood’s ace choreographer was recently in Kolkata to judge Bindass Dance, a Bengali dance reality show for children.
“I love children and that’s one of the reasons why I agreed to be a part of this show,” says the National Award-winning choreographer of films such as Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, Dabangg 2, Heropanti and Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani. HT City caught up with the choreographer on dance, Bollywood and more:
What made you take up this Bengali dance reality show?
This is my second reality show as a judge after Chak De Bachche. The language did not matter to me. I am doing it only because it has children. When the channel called me up and asked me to judge a reality show for kids, I immediately agreed. Otherwise, I am very choosy about the kind of reality shows I do. The children on the show are incredibly talented. They are doing all forms of dance such as locking popping, hip-hop, and classical.
You have a dance academy in Kolkata, is anyone from your academy participating in the show?
Yes, a girl from my academy is participating in the show. She is extremely talented. I cannot recall her name. It was the decision of the channel to choose her for the show.
Given your busy schedule, how often do you visit your dance academy in Kolkata?
This is my only dance academy in the world. One of my assistants run this academy on my behalf. I come here once in every six months or during the annual function. I have my other assistants to help. We have very talented dancers here. The academy is running very well.
You have earlier choreographed a song in the Bengali film, Bachchan. Do you want to choreograph for more Bengali films?
Sure, if good projects come my way I would love to choreograph more Bengali songs. I have choreographed a song for Jeet and Subhashree (he choreographed an item song in the film Bachchan).
We have seen you acting in Hey Bro and ABCD. When will we see you on the big screen again?
I have received a number of offers. Let us see how it goes.
You have directed Money Hai Toh Honey Hai and Swami and Angle). Are you planning to direct more films?
I will start working on scripts soon. Meanwhile, I am busy choreographing for films such as Brothers and Singh is Bling.
You have recently made Karenna Kapoor Khan sizzle in ‘Mera naam mary’, which is already a big hit. What are the factors you keep in mind when you choreograph an item song for a actor?
(Laughs) God has been kind to me. The music brings the steps instantly. All I think is that the steps should be catchy, attractive and the audience must like it.
Which Hollywood couple would you like to work with?
If I get an opportunity, I would love to work with Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie.
