Singer-anchor Deepali Kishore, a former participant of Sony’s Indian Idol Season Three, is now an actor. Apart from playing the lead in a Bhojpuri soap titled Badki Malkayen on Mahua TV, the 23-year-old will also be seen portraying Parul in Sahara One’s prime time daily soap, Tujh Sang Preet Lagayi Sajna. In the latter, she has replaced another actor.

“It happened by chance. I’d accompanied a friend for her audition for the Hindi show. The casting director asked me to do a screen test and within no time I was finalised for the part,” recalls Deepali, adding, “I don’t think stepping into another actor’s shoes is such a big problem. In fact, she’s paved the way for me. I’m sure that with everyone’s support I will be comfortable playing the role.”

A while ago, Meiyang Chang, who participated in Indian Idol with Deepali, and also co-hosted parts of season four with her, made his acting debut with Badmaash Company (2010), followed by a dance reality show. He’s yet to be seen in another movie.

A few years before that, Abhijeet Sawant, the first winner of Indian Idol, made his acting debut with Lottery, which failed to register with the audience. Didn’t the uncertainty of the acting profession deter her from switching lanes? “No,” says Deepali. “In no way have I switched lanes. I’ve simply given myself another career option. Tomorrow if I’m asked to be part of Indian Idol season six, I’ll drop everything for it because that show made me who I am. I’m a singer; I know how to emote with my voice. I became an actor by chance, but I’m a singer by choice, and singing will always remain my first love. Frankly, I cannot comment on Chang or Abhijeet’s work.”
