Like in its previous five seasons, this year too, TV show Indian Idol will have concerts around the country. However, this time around, broadcasters Sony Entertainment are planning to start at an earlier stage – right after they announce the top 10 contestants.

Danish Khan, the channel’s head of marketing, explains: “We’ve had our share of learning over the last five seasons. Earlier, we had concerts only after we got our top five participants and, by then, those names were fairly popular. This time, we’re advancing it because it will give the contestants more visibility.” Danish also hopes that “it will help the show get better ratings, because it’s at these concerts that we connect with viewers at the grass roots.”

The first phase of the concerts will take place in Pune, Kolkata and Jaipur, starting from July 11. Passes will be distributed free of cost at various coffee shops and malls. “Depending on how popular these three concerts are, we’ll plan the next phase in other cities. We would have loved to travel to the contestants’ home towns, but there’s a time constraint,” says Danish, adding that judges Asha Bhosle, Anu Malik, Salim Merchant and Sunidhi Chauhan will also be present at the concerts.
