Three Indian performers, stand-up comic Kapil Sharma and singers Armaan Malik and Arijit Singh, have made the country proud by making it to the top 10 at The SSE Arena, Wembley in the SSE Live Awards 2016.
The annual event in the UK celebrates live performers at their venues in Wembley, Belfast and Glasgow.
For the first time, the annual awards were thrown open to public voting, which began in December 2016 and ended on January 31, 2017. According to a DNA report, more than three million votes were received for performers across all SSE venues and the results were announced on Monday.
While Armaan was ranked number four, Arijit was in the seventh position and Kapil stood at number nine. What’s worth noting is that Arijit has performed in Wembley twice while this was Armaan’s debut act at the venue as part of his international tour.
“I performed at Wembley on September 24, 2016. It’s a date etched in my memory for life,” Armaan was quoted in the DNA report.
“To be able to do a solo international tour at the age of 21 was a huge deal for me. Getting the opportunity to perform at Wembley was a blessing. It also proved that age is not a barrier. All that is needed to excel is talent and hard work,” he said.
Meanwhile, the top three at Wembley are a diverse bunch—Matt Goss, a British singer-songwriter based in Las Vegas, Babymetal, a Japanese metal idol band, and Thunder, a legendary UK rock band.
