Imagine donning an outfit that weighs more than the person who’s wearing it. Fashion designer and owner of Libas, Riyaz Ganji, has designed a fifty-kilo

lehenga choli

with peacock designs, intricate embroidery and embellishments like crystals strewn all over it for the TV show, Sasural Simar Ka.

He says, “Though we originally made the outfit only for the show, where it is being used as Simar’s wedding outfit, the response has been so good that 25 more such pieces are already in production.” Riyaz reveals that the couture was detailed to compliment the hazel-eyed Deepika Samson, who plays Simar. Deepika, who weighs just 45 kilos, figured that her rich

weighs around 50 kilos. She says with a smile, “My

lehenga

is just perfect and the color combination too brings out the beauty of the detailed work on it.

But later, I realised that my outfit is heavier than me.” She quips, “While a bride is nervous on her D-Day, I am equally nervous about managing my outfit.” Riyaz says, “This year, I am going to play safe and stick to pinks, maroons, oranges, blues and greens for the wedding outfits. We had gone a bit radical last year, but customers prefer to choose colours that they will be able to wear in the long run. So we had to sell last year’s stock at almost a 70 to 80 per cent discount.”

The designer is set to showcase at the International Jewellery Week at the Grand Hyatt, Kalina, on August 2, followed by three more private fashion shows in the city.
