When the show Dexter started in 2006, he had no idea that it would make him an overnight star. Now, seven seasons down the line, actor Michael C Hall (left) enjoys the reputation of perhaps the most loved serial killer on the planet, thanks to his character in the US drama series. While season seven of the show wrapped up recently on Star World here, Hall reveals the next season might be the curtain call.
Why is Dexter a character audiences root for?
There is probably a degree to which he’s living out a dark fantasy that people have and also is seizing control of his world in a way that we feel perhaps we have increasing lack of control.
Is Dexter’s impulse to kill an addiction?
He adheres to the Code and it has worked for him and probably played into some of his sense of exceptionalism among killers, the way he goes about things and the kind of people he kills. But, he has an undeniable compulsion and, even though he is arguably doing it for the good of humanity, if you take away his knife, he is going to either implode or explode in ways that are much less measured and controlled.
Are you surprised by the global success of Dexter?
When we started the show, we hoped that we would find a little sort of boutique, cult audience and it turned out to be like a shopping mall and a really big cult.
Will Season 8 be the last season of Dexter?
We have a broad sense where we will end up at the end of the 8th season and that is an ending that (so far) will be the final episode.
