She’s won accolades for the country with her inspiring story, Bronze-winning performance at the London Olympics and humble demeanour. Now, if things go well, pugilist MC Mary Kom might soon have a tryst with mixed martial arts. The Super Fight League (SFL) owners — Raj Kundra and actor Sanjay Dutt — are set to forge a long-term strategic partnership with the Olympic medallist, not as a participant fighter though, according to a source.
Mary, who was the special guest at the finale of the TV show, SFL Challengers, on Saturday, is in the middle of what the insiders call "some serious discussions" about her involvement with SFL, as well as the TV show from next season onwards.“Raj and Sanjay want her involvement as a creative supervisor of sorts. So, she will be involved in the planning and execution of the event, besides interacting with the fighters. Other details are being worked out between them,” says an insider. “Both Raj and Sanjay feel that Mary’s presence should be used more efficiently.” It’s believed that Dutt, who couldn’t make it to the finale event, also had a detailed chat with Mary at the after-party."He (Sanjay) is also excited about this deal. He was thanking her for all her support," adds the insider. When contacted, Raj confirms the news, saying, "We are in talks with Mary Kom about a long-term partnership. In all likelihood, by September 25, we will be making the big announcement. It’s going to be a different yet special involvement."
Kundra — Shilpa Shetty’s husband — and Dutt founded SFL earlier this year. They launched their first event in March 2012. The next one kicks off in September in Bengaluru followed by the SFL grand finale in the city in December.
Dutt’s surprise entry:
Although Sanjay Dutt is the co-owner of SFL, he couldn’t make it to the final event on Saturday as he was shooting for the Saamy remake in Hyderabad. But later that day, the actor surprised everyone by turning up at the after-party. “He acted well in real life too,” says Raj Kundra. “Sanjay called and said he won’t be able to make it and that I should take care of Manyata. You can imagine how surprised I was when I saw him walking in with Manyata? It made my day.”
