Currently in its 18th season, Power Rangers is possibly one of the longest-running shows on international television. Even in India, the five rangers — red, blue, pink, green, yellow and gold — have been part of many childhoods, including American actor Alex Heartman’s. The 22-year-old who plays Jayden, the Red Ranger in Power Rangers Samurai, says, “I was a big fan of the show and the Red Ranger was my favourite. When I went in to audition, I knew that part would come to me. I just knew it.”
Though the show has a considerable fan following among kids, Heartman insists that it’s the parents who usually spot him in public. “The children don’t (recognise me) as much because they’re more into the suits, but a lot of moms and dads can tell. I remember this one time when a mother walked up to me with her newborn and told me she had named her kid Jayden after my character,” says the actor, who earned himself a Nickelodeon Kids Choice Awards nomination this year for the show, which airs from Monday to Friday on Nickelodeon and Sonic.
But what Heartman is also excited about right now is his Hollywood film debut, Take A Chance, which he has just finished filming. “I play the the antagonist in it,” he says, adding that he wanted to play a different part after essaying the role of the ‘hero’ in this show. “The film is about this kid who comes to America from Japan to train in martial arts, and then he tries to steal my girlfriend and so on. I’m excited about it. I would like my career to eventually move in that direction.”
Has he been to India yet? “Unfortunately I have not, but if there are any monsters around there, then I’ll surely be there to protect you,” smiles the Red Ranger.
