Not even for a big banner
Esha Deol let Yashraj’s teleshow Powder pass, to focus on momma Malini’s movie, Tell Me Oh Khuda.tv Updated: Jan 04, 2010 18:20 IST
It’s not just Abhishek Bachchan from the younger lot of star kids to make his television debut this year. It’s believed that even Esha Deol was approached with an offer for the small screen. But Hema Malini’s daughter chose to give that a miss to give another shot to her movie career in her mother’s next production,
Tell Me Oh Khuda
According to our source, Aditya Chopra offered the Deol gal the only strong female part in his company’s teleshow,
TV. “Esha was Aditya’s first choice. He called her to discuss the show and her role in it. But she wasn’t too keen on getting into television, not as yet.
She told her predicament to Aditya, adding that her priority was her mother’s production, which was scheduled to start any time soon, then. However, she did assert that she was keen to do another movie for the Yashraj banner, if they had a suitable role for her,” recalls our source.
It has also been learnt that after Deol opted out, Dipannita Sharma was approached. But it seems the money didn’t work out, so she too chose to let it pass. That’s when Geetika Tyagi was approached, and later finalised. When contacted, she confirmed that she had heard the same too.
She says, “The director, Atul Sabharwal, will be able to tell you what exactly happened. I was told that he didn’t approach Esha directly but Aditya Chopra had spoken to her. He also assured her that if she didn’t feel like taking it up, he had no problems with it.”
Tyagi recalls having auditioned for the show to be produced by Yashraj about 10 months ago. “I got through the initial auditions, but I don’t know what happened later. Then, all of a sudden, I got a call from them, about eight months after the first audition. They wanted me to do a screen test for a role. I’d forgotten about the first audition but after the screen test I was told that I was on,” she says.
Interestingly, Tyagi’s role is that of Vrinda Shahni, an investigator in the Narcotics Control Bureau, who’s trying to make her career in a man’s world. “She also has to deal with the chauvinistic attitude in the force where she’s often suppressed, compelling her to do things discreetly,” enthuses Tyagi.
Sabharwal confirmed that Esha and Dipannita had been considered for the role. “We did meet Esha and Dipannita, but didn’t finalise them. They were told that they were tentative, but eventually we signed Geetika,” says the director. He also adds that Chopra approved of Tyagi before signing her on. “I’d done a short film with Geetika, Raindrops on a Tin Roof, which Aditya liked. He suggested that we screen-test Geetika. That’s how she was finalised for the role,” he concludes.
