While there are popular faces in the dance reality show, Nach Baliye, this season, Vinod Thakur has stood out for his indomitable spirit despite his physical disability.

Confident and ambitious, Vinod talks about bagging his next assignment with an international theatre group and wanting his wife Raksha to become a TV actor.

Why did you participate in a dance reality show?

I did India’s Got Talent earlier, where I was the runner-up. I wanted to prove that being handicapped isn’t a curse. This show is a good platform to showcase my talent and celebrate my love before the world. Earlier, few people recognised me, but today, millions, including people in the film industry, know me. I’m not worried about my future, as I know I will get good work.

Did you feel insecure about competition from popular celebrities?

I would worry about votes, as everyone is successful in their own right, but I’m glad the viewers are judging us on merit and talent, and not popularity. Whenever I have performed well, I’ve got votes. In fact, I feel I have become popular on the show and I might just win.

Do you ever feel insecure about your wife?

Never. I feel sorry for people who think that, as they are underestimating us. People thought I would be voted out in the first couple of episodes but, today, we are in the top eight. More than myself, I want to help build a career for Raksha. We are in talks with some makers and she might become a TV actor.

Do you feel you might be getting votes out of sympathy?

No. I had told the audiences from day one to vote for me only if I’m good. If they sympathise with me, then it would be pointless for me to be in this competition. The crew and judges admire me for the stunts I have done on the show.

What’s next for you?

I have signed up for an international theatre group and will be performing with them post this show. I have offers from films, too, so let’s see what happens. I am also looking at Hollywood films.
