Rahul Raj Singh, the boyfriend of actor Pratyusha Banerjee who committed suicide on April 1, was questioned by the Bangur Nagar police for two hours on Wednesday. Rahul was earlier booked for abetment of suicide and assault by the police based on an FIR lodged by Pratyusha’s mother.
Rahul was questioned about the sequence of events on April 1 when Banerjee was found hanging from a ceiling fan in the Goregaon apartment which she shared with Rahul. Police officials later said the sequence of events matched their findings.
Rahul was brought in an ambulance from Shree Sai Hospital where he has been admitted since April 3. His aunt, actor Sahila Chaddha, was also present in the police station during questioning.
When mediapersons asked him about allegations of assault, Rahul said, “Bring my Pratyusha back, can you?” Police sources said Rahul has denied harassment claims.
Rahul told police that he had gone to the church in the morning. He returned home and took a nap. He slept in the same room with Banerjee and got up around 1pm, he told officials in his statement. Finding Pratyusha drinking alcohol during the day, he said he had reprimanded the actor.
Rahul told officials he left home to get lunch after 2.45 pm. He returned home around 3.15 pm and found the door locked from inside. He called Banerjee on her phone several times but did not get a response. He then sent her a text message.
When Pratyusha didn’t reply, he went to bring a key maker to open the lock. Rahul also requested a neighbourhood cook to enter their apartment from the balcony. It was only when the cook opened the door from inside that Rahul found the Balika Vadhu actor had committed suicide.
According to officials, the sequences of events were corroborated by the CCTV footage and statements of other witnesses. Rahul confessed that he was at a hotel with a woman on March 31 night, as previously claimed by his former lawyer Neeraj Gupta.
The police will also question him about the financial transactions shown in Rahul’s bank statements. Rahul has to be at the police station every day between 11 am to 1 pm till April 18, according to a Bombay high court order.
During his questioning, Rahul denied allegations of assault, sources said.
