Three of the year’s most anticipated films, Shah Rukh Khan’s Ra.One that releases in October, Salman Khan’s Bodyguard that releases around Eid and Ajay Devgn’s Singam that releases in July, have been acquired by the Star Network. The films will premiere on the Hindi language channels of the group soon after their theatrical run is over.
Hemal Jhaveri, vice president, commercial and strategic planning, confirms the names and says, “It’s correct that we’ve acquired these films. One of the key reasons is that apart from being the most looked-forward-to movies this year, these films have promising and entertaining content. They also have three of the top actors as leads and I’m sure they will not only have a great run at the box-office but will fetch us good numbers too.”
Ra.One is being touted as one of the costliest films acquired by Star Network at approximately Rs 40 crore. Tradesmiths, on condition of anonymity, affirm that Shah Rukh’s ambitious project’ssatellite rights have changed hands, beating the record set by Aamir Khan’s 3 Idiots that went to Sony for approximately Rs 36 crore. Bodyguard’s satellite rights’ price couldn’t be found till the time of going to press, while Singam, reportedly, has fetched Rs 18 crore for the TV premiere.
Jhaveri, without commenting on the figures, says, “It’s information that every channel keeps to itself. But I’m amazed with the kind of speculations around the movies, especially Ra.One. With every enquiry, the figure at which we’ve bought the rights rises by Rs 5 crore. I’m proud that my company has paid the right figure for the right film.” The group’s entertainment channels have recently a switched to the HD (high-definition) format with special sound system to accompany the visuals. Jhaveri says, “Kids and adults love superhero fantasies alike.
The promos of Ra.One boast of amazing special effects. On the other hand, Ajay is back in Singam with a heavy dose of action while. Bodyguard has Salman Khan, who I think, is extremely entertaining. I’m sure each film will look and sound awesome when we premiere them in our new format.”
