‘Reality TV is the same everywhere’
Actor Sachin Sharma on directing an American TV show.tv Updated: Apr 12, 2010 18:31 IST
He started off as a news anchor. Moved on to become chocolate boy of daily soaps such as Kahani Ghar Ghar Ki.
But unlike others of his ilk, Sachin Sharma graduated to direction. His directorial debut is American reality talent hunt, Model Professor. Sharma spoke to HT City about the project from Los Angeles.
From news anchoring to acting and now directing an American show, it’s quite a progression in a decade.Yes, it has been a long and tough journey. Lot of hard work... So much that I didn’t realise I’ve spent a decade in this profession. But I see all three parts as the branches of the same tree.
What is Model Professor about and what is your role on the show? How did it happen?
It’s a reality show for aspiring models and I’m its director and a celebrity guest on it. I have an agent through whom I got in touch with the producer of the show, American model Daisy Pollard, early last year. And after a series of grilling interviews and details on ideas, they signed me on.
Where is the show going to be aired? Will we see it in India?
The show is for an American channel, so the Indian audience won’t be able to see it. I so wish could get it here, but I promise that this is just the beginning.
Are you experienced enough to take on a foreign reality show?
Well, even I thought that reality shows in Hollywood are too different from what we have in India. But fact is most Indian shows are rip-offs of American shows. So apart from the cultural difference, they are all the same — the same celeb fights, gossips and backroom drama. The unit here calls me the S Factor, as I add the Indian masala to the show.
How easy is it for an Indian actor to direct a foreign cast and crew on a foreign location?
It is difficult, really tough, but we are one of the largest English-speaking population. And thanks to all forms of media, we are very aware of the cultures and pop cultures of other countries.
