The last time we saw Sherlock, he was on a plane to nowhere. He had said his goodbyes and his bromance with Watson appeared to be over - exile being the only option.
Among tears and farewells, there came terror - ace nemesis Moriarty was back and he was orchestrating his return on ALL the screens available in London. Cancel flight, call Sherlock back.
After that, wait for almost two years for Sherlock (Benedict Cumberbatch) and Watson (Martin Freeman) to get their game going again. Well, that is the gestation period for a regular Sherlock season. The fans find the pain excruciating? Too bad.
Let's go back to season 3 ending. It was a cliffhanger if we ever saw one - was Moriarty alive or was he terrorising London from beyond the grave? What will Sherlock do? Last time they met, Sherlock had to orchestrate his own death and had to vanish from London leaving Watson, and us - the dedicate fandom - in frenzy of despair for months.

It seems that's exactly what Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss, the show's creators, have in mind for the fans again - give a cliffhanger, vanish for months, let fans pull out their hair till none are left. Repeat.
It seems the creators and BBC, the channel on which it is screened, like to toy with fans a la Sherlock with Watson. BBC went on a Tweet spree on Wednesday - their version of 'Elementary, my dear Watson' and let out information which can best be described as tease.
In one of the tweets, they said, "The Game is on - again! #Sherlock #221back."
They followed it up with, "Shooting on the #Sherlock special will begin in January 2015, with the series shooting later next year. #221back." Notice here: no final date for the series' beginning date.
They then asked fans if they "missed" Sherlock (really!). "Miss me?" #Sherlock, the hit @BBCOne drama, will return for a Special, followed by a series of three new episodes. #221back."
And then the killer, "We're ready to unleash the most shocking and surprising series of #Sherlock yet. The only thing is to expect is the unexpected... #221back."
So while there is a long and unending wait in store for the fans, we can expect an awe-inspiring series at the end of it. And not just the three episodes as is the wont of Sherlock but a bonus special too. Freeman had earlier revealed that the show will come out around Christmas 2015.
We are waiting with bated breath, we have our deerstalkers out in anticipation and we are expecting only the unexpected. Just make sure that next time, the wait is shorter.
