Nineties actor Shilpa Shirodkar is set to return to her old career with a show on Doordarshan called Betiya Vardaan Hoti Hai. Since she got married in 2000, she has been globe-trotting. But now that her daughter Anushka is old enough, she wants to return to work.
“When I returned (to India) I met (actor) Kiran Kumar, who spoke to me about this project. After that, things fell into place,” she says. The show revolves around the story of an educated girl who is married to a villager. Shilpa’s character sets out to prove that women aren’t the weaker sex. “I’m sure it will be one of the biggest shows DD has ever seen,” she says.
Why DD, is a question she is often asked. “I say, why not? A show like Satyamev Jayate is aired on DD because of the channel’s reach. I’m doing the show for the great concept, not the channel.” Having shot the pilot episode, the producers are now awaiting approval from DD. Though she’s never been on the small screen before, Shilpa doesn’t feel it’s a step down from movies.
“Acting is what I’ve done all my life. I can’t go wrong. I’m serious about working now and I think the show is the right step for me.”
