American streaming platform, Netflix, proved particularly generous with its teasers at this year’s San Diego Comic Con, which opened July 21 in the USA. Fans of superheroes and the world of Marvel found out more on the site’s upcoming series, Luke Cage, Iron Fist and The Defenders.
Due to land September 30 on Netflix, a first teaser for Luke Cage showcases the superhuman force acquired by this African-American superhero following a sabotaged scientific experiment. The video also hints at the painful past of the character, who has previously appeared in Jessica Jones, the most recent Marvel series to land on Netflix. Actor Mike Colter (The Good Wife, Zero Dark Thirty) will be stepping into the role once again.
At the end of the Netflix panel, San Diego convention-goers were then treated to two eagerly awaited teasers. The first, for Iron Fist, gave a brief summary of the story of Daniel Rand, an American hero who, as a young boy, lost his parents on a trip to the heart of the Himalayas. Taken in by Lei Kung, the boy received advanced martial arts training. Ten years later, he returned to the USA to avenge the death of his parents, caused by his father’s former business associate Ward Meachum. Iron Fist is played by Finn Jones, a British actor known to Game of Thrones fans as Loras Tyrell.
Iron Fist is due to land on Netflix in 2017, along with The Defenders, a series featuring the full line-up of Marvel/Netflix characters, i.e., Daredevil -- which has just bagged a third season -- Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist. A first teaser was presented at San Diego Comic-Con, although it didn’t preview any footage from the series, which hasn’t yet started filming. Fans of the genre will instantly recognize the voice of Stick, Daredevil’s mentor, saying “You think the four of you can save New York? You can’t even save yourselves,” as Nirvana’s “Come as You Are” creates a creepy soundtrack.
