Buzz is that Subhash Ghai’s Mukta Arts will be producing a TV show for Star Plus. The show is rumoured to be a daily, featuring a mix of newcomers and old faces. A source from the channel informs, “Subhash was supposed to produce a show for us. There is no concrete news as of now. It was going to be a daily when the talks were initiated recently.”
Another source from Mukta Arts confirms that the daily show is happening: “We are working on the soap. It’s a daily but the channel is not finalised. The scripting and casting has started.” Some industry insiders believe that the show is for Star Plus and is already being shot at Goregaon’s Film City.
Following their footsteps
Insiders say this is not the first time Ghai has ventured into TV. He did that many years ago, with Rajeev Shukla, but the show didn’t quite take off.
Lately, quite a few leading Bollywood production houses and artistes have jumped the TV production bandwagon. Shah Rukh Khan’s Red Chilies Idiot Box is one of them. They produced two shows for NDTV Imagine, Ghar Ki Baat Hai and Knights & Angels. The first one, a sort of a takeoff from Yeh Jo Hai Zindagi, didn’t do too well. While Shailaja Kejriwal of Imagine stresses that the show will keep returning in six-month cycles, the buzz says otherwise. Knights & Angels too proved to be a dud, more so after IPL 2 was shifted to South Africa and the cheerleaders couldn’t be taken on.
Next in line
Right now, Red Chilies Idiot Box is working on the sequel of Fauji, the show that marked Shah Rukh’s entry in showbiz. Channels vying for the show include Imagine and Colors. A source says, “The show is being scripted under the supervision of Colonel Kapoor who wrote Fauji. The cast is yet to be finalised.” Two more shows are also in the pipeline.
Yash Raj Films is also said to be busy with its first ever TV daily. Buzz was also that they would be launching their own channel. The news about the soap has been circulating since 2007 but everything fell into place only recently.
The show, it’s said, will have special appearances by Shah Rukh Khan and Rani Mukherji, apart from a bunch of fresh faces, some of them even imports from London.
Meanwhile, Rajshri Productions, that stepped into TV production with Woh Rehnewali Mehlon Ki, the channel driver for Sahara One, is producing a lavish daily soap for Imagine, that will go on air soon.
