Nina Dobrev, lead star of popular TV drama The Vampire Diaries is set to bid farewell to the show after sixth season.

The 26-year-old actor, who filled the role of Elena Gilbert, took to Instagram to share a picture with TVD creator and showrunner Julie Plec, and wrote, "I always knew I wanted Elena's story to be a six season adventure, and within those six years I got the journey of a lifetime," People magazine reported.

Dobrev reminisced some of the show's craziest plots, and invited fans to celebrate with her by watching the finale of the season to say goodbye to her character. She thanked her fans for their love and support, asking them to fasten the seatbelts for she was ready to give them a lot more with her future projects. Plec issued a statement saying that it was both bittersweet and beautiful to let Dobrev go after the closeness they had formed in over 6 years.

They would miss her and "the 400 characters she played, but we look forward to the insane and exciting challenge of continuing to tell stories of our Salvatore Brothers and our much-loved and gifted ensemble."
