A channel closing overnight to TRPs being shelved, a huge mythological hit, remarriages a trend on screen and link-ups off it — this year saw it all. Check out what made news on the small screen in 2012.

Anandi divorcing Jagya and remarrying

Four years ago, the hit show Balika Vadhu, based on child marriage, revolutionised the Indian TV industry, sparking a wave of socially responsible shows. This year, it turned progressive with Anandi divorcing her philandering husband and later getting remarried. This move was applauded by audiences and the industry alike.

Remarriages on TV shows

Plots of TV shows are thought to be regressive, but this year, many of them touched upon the topic of remarriage and creating awareness about the issue. We saw Dadisa supporting divorcée Anandi’s (Pratyusha Banerjee) second marriage in Balika Vadhu, widow Megha Vyas’s (Aakanksha Singh) father-in-law wanting her remarriage in Na Bole Tum Na Maine Kuch Kaha, the divorced Aarti (Kratika Sengar) of Punar Vivah, Mona Singh of Kya Huaa Tera Vaada, among others, taking this progressive step.

Imagine shutting down

Sudden, shocking and unexpected, the channel Imagine shut shop on May 11 overnight. Though it had some hit shows since its launch in 2008 the team couldn’t maintain the tempo and dismal TRPs over the years led to the abrupt move.

Mohnish Behl exit

Five months after going gaga over the plot of the show Kuch Toh Log Kahenge, Mohnish Behl quit. Officially, health issues were cited as the reason, but there were rumours that his wife was uncomfortable with the romantic scenes between Kritika Kamra and him.

TAM ratings shut for two months

After concerns were raised by the government and the TV industry about the reliability of the Television Audience Measurement (TAM) data, the agency suspended its audience measurement report for two months. This was also because of the introduction of set-top boxes and digitisation process in the metros. The Indian Broadcasting Foundation (IBF), Advertising Agencies Association of India, (AAAI) and Indian Society of Advertisers (ISA) were on board for this move.

The Ram Kapoor-Eva Grover link-up

When rumours of the much-married Ram Kapoor’s link-up with his Bade Achhe Lagte Hain co-star Eva Grover surfaced, it raised many eyebrows. There were whispers in the industry that Eva and Ram had a fling while she was on the show playing the role of his stepmother. But Ram laughed off the rumours.

Ram KapoorRival channels come together for Indo-Pak music show, Sur Kshetra

When Sahara One announced an Indo-Pak musical extravaganza, Sur Kshetra, produced by Gajendra Singh, it made big news, but the show was stuck for a long time until Colors came to the rescue. And in a first-of-its-kind move, two Hindi general entertainment channels (GECs) tied up to simulcast the singing-based reality show. Though the show hasn’t done very well in terms of TRPs, the attempt to bring two nations together on one platform is commendable.

Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa shifted to Colors from Sony

In a shocking development, Colors bagged the rights to broadcast the Indian version of Dancing With The Stars, called Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa. The show had been aired on rival channel Sony Entertainment for four seasons, but since Colors delivered a hit sixth season with dancing diva Madhuri Dixit and filmmaker Karan Johar as judges, it looks like their move worked.

Mythological Mahadev becomes a hit

With saas-bahu shows ruling the roost, rarely does any other concept get great viewership. And though mythology is a good bet in our country, not all mythological shows work. The story of Lord Shiva starting from his love story with Sati and later Parvati worked wonders and made news for giving tough competition to rival shows at 8 pm namely Balika Vadhu and Iss Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Doon.

Niaa Sharma-Kushal Tandon caught red-handed

These two young actors, who had sizzling chemistry as a couple on-screen, were caught getting cosy in their make-up room. Reportedly the two were making out even though Kushal had gone to town showing off his foreigner girlfriend Elena. Once the news was out, both parties denied it, claiming that it never happened and that they were just good friends.
