Playing a comic character for seven years isn’t the easiest job. But actor Kavita Kaushik has proved her mettle as Chandramukhi Chautala in FIR. Now, with another show, Tota Weds Maina (TWM), in her kitty, she’s one of the most popular actors on TV today.
You were going to quit FIR, then you stayed after a hike. Were you just angling for more money?
I was going to quit. But the makers convinced me and I stayed. I wouldn’t want to comment on my pay. I’ve never gone on record, unlike others, to say I’m one of the highest paid people.
But you are, right?
Yes, but I don’t say that. Actors aren’t like bankers or executives who will be promoted. You had a tiff with FIR’s co-star, Aamir Ali. What happened? I’m the hero of the show, who does the action, stunts and comedy. Aamir is just one of the other characters. Other than the director, producer and me, a 100 people have come and gone from FIR. I also have a lot on my plate — I’m doing another show, shifting my house, getting my parents here. I don’t have time for tiffs.
What’s your character in TWM like?
It’s the absolute opposite of Chautala, who is powerful and is in control of everything. Maina is naughty, fashion-conscious and desi.
In real life, would you chase after a man like Chautala does?
Only if I find one worth chasing after. Apart from eating biryani at Salman’s (Khan) place just to get to talk to him, I haven’t gone any further. Salim saab (Salman’s dad) is a big fan of FIR and he invited me home a couple of times.
Who’s your kind of man?
I’m super-dominating and blunt, and men get scared of talking to me. A man has to be courageous and not be intimidated by a strong, independent girl. Tough men are a little hard to find.
Is it awkward when you meet your ex Karan V Grover in public?
No. It doesn’t matter. I can’t remember what I did 10 days ago, so recalling memories from three-four years ago is tough.
