TV comics perform live in the city
The Comedy Store opens stage for Hindi acts, feature Rehmat Khan, Vinod Kumar and otherstv Updated: Jun 19, 2012 17:07 IST
Their witticisms and antics on comedy reality shows on television have been entertaining audiences for many years now. And if you’re a fan, you can watch your favourite Hindi stand-up comics performing in the city tonight.
In a first event of its kind, The Comedy Store will open its stage for Hindi acts tonight in a show titled Hansi Ke Badshaah. It will feature popular names such as Rehman Khan, Rajan Shrivastava, Srikant Maski and Vinod Kumar. “Since we have expanded The Comedy Store to India, it was definitely not going to be just about English comedy,” says Charlotte Ward, operations and marketing manager, The Comedy Store, adding, “Tonight’s show is like a test run.” Rehmat Khan, who has performed in shows like Comedy Circus 2 and Comedy Champions, admits that he was initially reluctant to perform at the event.
“I was wary about what the audience’s reaction would be, because the venue is known for its English comic acts. These acts are very different from the Hindi ones. For instance, you can swear in English and get away with it, but Hindi gaalis don’t go down too well. However, I will give the show my best.” His fellow comic, Vinod Kumar feels that performing live involves a lot more spontaneity.
“When you’re standing in front of a TV camera, you may get to take multiple shots, but when you’re performing live, the first impression is the last impression,” he says. Though the comics are often seen taking digs at each other on TV, Khan says that they will think twice before pulling pranks on people from the audience. “We have to be a lot more careful when we are making fun of someone in the audience. However, I am expecting the audience at The Comedy Store to be very open, so let’s see how it goes,” says Rehman.
