Farhan Akhtar tells us what he admires in Rahman and Shah Rukh...
Like the rest of the country, I want to congratulate AR Rahman for his well-deserved Golden Globe win. He is one of our most consistent composers. Even though some of his albums have not worked, he has not succumbed to catering to others’ whims. Rahman’s approach to his art is almost spiritual.
I had contacted Rahman for the music of Dil Chahta Hai but things didn’t work out and then Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy stepped in. After the music of the film was released, it was liked by all, including Rahman. When he met me then, he said he was so glad our collaboration didn’t work out because then the soundtrack would not have sounded as good as Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy’s did. That, especially in this industry, was so refreshing. He is a wonderful, calm and gentle person and I wish all good things for him.
I was also so pleased to see Shah Rukh on the Golden Globes stage. I recently spent some quality time with him on the sets of my show. I directed him in Don. Being with him again reminded me how much fun and how witty he is and how much I missed hanging out with him. We used to play a lot of PS2 in his house.
I think what keeps Shah Rukh going is waking up in the morning and wondering what more you can do in life. That positive frame of mind gives you energy and keeps you fresh.
