Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson stars as an ex-footballer who reinvents himself as a sports manager/agent in the second trailer for HBO’s brand new comedy Ballers.
If that sounds like a dry logline, wait till you see the trailer.
Johnson brings his trademark brand of magnetic charm to the role of Spencer Strassmore, a cross between Jerry Maguire and Ari Gold; which isn’t the only similarity Ballers shares with Entourage. Like that HBO staple from the 2000s, Ballers also explores a hedonistic Los Angeles lifestyle, substituting Entourage’s movie business shenanigans for the highly lucrative world of sports, specifically football (the American kind).
The trailer is sprinkled with quotable one-liners (‘If it drives, flies or floats, lease it’), raunchy humour, Johnson delivering sermons on how to become rich and stay rich, as lyrics like ‘I came, I saw, I conquered, I balled’ thump in the background.
It’s not all partying and girls, however, as many supermodels remind us consistently in the trailer. The Rock might appear stoic on the outside but he’s damaged on the inside, the natural side-effects of getting chewed out of the ruthless world of professional sports. But as the tagline says, ‘legends don’t retire, they reinvent’, much like The Rock, who has successfully reinvented himself into a movie star named Dwayne Johnson.
Ballers co-stars hilarious comedian Rob Corddry, Donovan W Carter, Troy Garity and Jazmyn Simon. It is produced by ex-Entourage alum Stephen Levinson and the pilot episode is directed by Peter Berg (Hancock, Lone Survivor). The series is set to debut on June 21.
