Earlier this week, fans of Upen Patel and Karishma Tanna were pleasantly surprised to learn that the couple had signed a Chinese film with a popular production company.
They had announced this news on an app that specialises in breaking news. However, before the fans could rejoice, the actors revealed on Twitter that the news was false.
Upen explains, “The developers of the app approached us with this idea. For every download of the app (users need to download the app to access the breaking stories on it) and click on the story’s link, the company would donate money to a charitable cause of our choice. I opted for a lesser-known NGO, Paras, that works for women empowerment.”
As there were over a lakh downloads, a considerable amount of money was donated to the NGO. The news was trending on Twitter for over four hours the day the story was uploaded.
Ask Upen if he was worried about this trick backfiring, and he says, “Not at all. The moment you click on the news link, it says the news is false, and an amount will be donated to the NGO. On Twitter, both of us got a good response from our fans. Being a celebrity, if you are able to raise funds for charity, then why not?”
