India’s defence budget compared to other countries

India needs to modernise its armed forces as also bring up to date its internal security apparatus to protect its frontiers and homeland.

The following dual-axis chart shows India’s total military expenditure in Rs and total military expenditure as a % of GDP over the years.

While in absolute terms India’s defence expenditure has jumped manifold, as a proportion of GDP, it has actually fallen over the last 25 years.

The following chart shows countries with the highest military spending in 2014.
