Diego Maradona turns 57: Fun facts about Argentina’s football icon

Diego Maradona, Argentina’s football icon, turns 57. The former skipper, who helped Argentina win the 1986 World Cup by defeating West Germany. The Argentine legend is best remembered for his ‘Hand of God’ goal was against England in the same edition which created football folklore. Maradona became coach of Argentina in November 2008. He was in charge of the team at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa before leaving at the end of the tournament. The 57-year-old was recently handed an ambassadorial role by the game’s global governing body FIFA.On being handed the role, Maradona said, “Finally I can fulfil one of the lifelong dreams; to work for a clean and transparent FIFA alongside people who really love football.” Maradona, who has 91 caps, was invited back into the FIFA fold thanks to a warm relationship with Blatter’s successor Gianni Infantino, who was elected in February last year. Over the years, Maradona has been suffering from a whole range of health issues but he still participates in football events and conclaves from all over the world.
