Weren’t we all mesmerised by the glow on Kareena Kapoor’s face on her wedding day? And if you think you too can look equally beautiful on your special day with some miracle makeup, then, well, you are absolutely wrong!

“To achieve that glow in your complexion, you must prepare well in advance, and not necessarily with expensive salon sessions or cosmetics but through your diet and some homemade antidotes,” says beauty expert Aashmeen Munjaal. In fact, Kareena was once quoted saying that she doesn’t even believe in facials. The 32-year-old’s beauty regime simply includes thoroughly cleaning her face with a face wash, homemade fruit masks and a good sunscreen when heading out. Once in an interview, Kareena said that the real secret behind her glow is her diet that includes loads of green veggies such as spinach and broccoli, a good portion of whole grains, and six to eight glasses of boiled water everyday.

“I eat every two-three hours, and my dinner is always light…usually dal, some vegetable, curd and roti,” she was once quoted saying. The actor also admitted to dedicating an hour to ashtanga and power yoga every day. So, if you are all set to look the best on your wedding, you know what to do!

Orange ginger mint tango

Ingredients: 3 ripe oranges, 2 tsp ginger juice, 2 tsp mint juice, a pinch of black salt, a mint sprig for garnish, a handful of crushed ice (optional)

Method: Squeeze ripe oranges into a glass. Do not sieve, retain the pulp as it will add to your fibre needs. Pour in the ginger and mint juice, add the black salt and some crushed ice if you want. This drink is rich in magnesium, folic acid and electrolytes.

Home made fruit masks

For combination to oily skin
Orangey goodness: Mix a tablespoon of yogurt with three teaspoon of orange juice. Apply on your face and leave for about 20 minutes and then rinse off with lukewarm water. It work wonders for combination to oily skin type. While orange has skin-lightening agents that help improve complexion, its citrus juices help lend a refreshing glow to the skin. The yogurt maintains the moisture level.

For dry skin
Avocado magic: Take two teaspoons of honey and mash an avocado in it. Add a teaspoon of milk cream, pour a few drops of rose water and apply the mask on your face. Rinse off after about 30 minutes. Avocado makes the skin soft and smooth, while the rest of the ingredients further help in nourishing the dry skin.

Power yoga for radiant skin
Though Larry Schultz is known to be the creator of power yoga, it has its roots in the Indian Ashtanga style of yoga that emphasises on the development of physical flexibility and healthy blood circulation, resulting to a fit body and glowing skin. The asanas (poses) are conducted in close synchronisation with breathing patterns. You can learn a few Power Yoga asanas, as instructed by celebrity yoga and Pilates instructor Kristin McGee by logging on to www.youtube.com/watch?v=wRu_jMyLCgs

Diet for glowing skin

NUTS: Nuts, in general, are very nutritious, providing protein and many essential vitamins such as B and E and minerals like potassium, selenium and magnesium. They also contain omega 3 fatty acids which are vital for the skin and hair and will give that extra glow to your skin, so make them a part of your daily diet and pop in 15 almonds or 10 walnuts daily.

FLAXSEED: The high content of omega 3 fatty acid has made this ancient flaxseed become our modern miracle food. To prevent skin from looking tired and saggy take a tablespoon of flaxseeds daily.

GREEN TEA: Green tea contains a compound known as Flavonoids which is excellent for the skin as it reduces inflammation and keeps skin smooth and blemish-free. Start having green tea regularly, at least two weeks before your wedding.

LEMON: Have lemon juice with one teaspoon honey in one glass of warm water every day. It acts as a skin cleanser, and due to the presence of astringent properties, removes acne scars and improves the skin tone, making it glow.

RAINBOW DIET: Incorporate colours in your diet by opting for different coloured fruits and veggies. Be it rich, red tomatoes, lush green leafy veggies, crunchy orange carrots, citrusy oranges, or blood-red pomegranates. It gives you all the antioxidants and flavanoids required for that glowing complexion. While carrots are an excellent source of vitamin A, an essential nutrient for healthy skin, they also contain high levels of antioxidants, which prevent the damage done to skin by free radicals. Rich in Vitamin C, oranges improve skin texture, while pomegranates help prevent acne by eliminating the root causes, through improving your digestive problems and blood circulation. You can even apply pomegranate juice on acne-affected skin to remove scars.

STAY HYDRATED: The key to healthy living is to clean the system of all the toxins which are produced daily in our body due to the pollution and stress. Take plenty of water or fluids which will help wash the toxins from the body, giving that extra glow to your skin. At least two litres per day is mandatory. Include coconut water, fresh lime water, lassi and soups as well as detox drinks like orange -ginger-mint tango, fruit vegetable sherbet, apple and tomato mocktail in your diet. Avoid aerated drinks as they dehydrate the system.
