Beijing Police shot dead 13 persons after an armed group drove a truck into a police station and set off explosives in the remote southern Xinjiang region, more than 1500km south of the capital Urumqi on Saturday morning, state media reports said.

According to the official news agency Xinhua, the group carried out the attack at the office of the public security bureau, or the local police station, in the Yecheng county in the southern Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region (XUAR).

"The gangsters drove a truck to ram the building of the public security bureau of Yecheng County in southern Xinjiang and set off explosives. Police shot and killed 13 attackers at the scene. Three policemen were slightly injured," the Xinhua report said.

It was not known whether any of the attackers were arrested.

Xinjiang is home to the ethnic Muslim Uyghur community and the region has recently see a sharp rise in violence.

"Violent attacks in the name of "jihad" have been increasing since 2009 and are the biggest threat to the region, according to the regional public security department," the Xinhua report said.

Saturday's attacks comes days after the government executed 13 Uyghur men for their involvement in terror attacks and, what the state media calls, violent crimes.

"They were convicted of organizing, leading and participating in terrorist groups, murder, arson, theft and illegal manufacture, storage and transportation of explosives," according to local courts.

"In 2012, seven attackers were shot dead after killing 13 people in a knife attack in Yecheng, also known by its Uighur name of Kargilik, a remote town on the road leading to China's mountainous border with Pakistan," a Reuters report said.

A suicide bombing last month killed 39 people at a market in central Urumqi. And, in March, 29 people were stabbed to death at a train station in the southwestern city of Kunming.
