A Chinese court on Friday sentenced five persons from the Muslim-dominated restive Xinjiang province to varied prison terms for inciting separatism and endangering national security.

The sentences ranged from seven years to 15 years after a trial in the Kashagar Prefecture Intermediate People’s Court, state-run Xinhua news agency reported. Xinhua also said separatists from abroad are attempting to penetrate the Muslim-majority areas of the far-western and restive Xinjiang province, a day after police shot dead one attacker during a checking of vehicles in southern Xinjiang.

China is a home to some 8 million Uyghurs, a Muslim community. The Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region (XUAR) is home to most of them.

But it is only in counties of the remote southern XUAR that Uyghurs are still in majority; there are more Hans – the major ethnic group in China – than Uyghurs in rest of the province including in Urumqi, the provincial capital.
