A massive earthquake on Friday deep under the sea in Russia's Far East was felt in cities including Moscow but emergency services called off a tsunami warning issued for the Pacific Sakhalin region.

"There were repercussions of the quake in Nizhny Novgorod, Moscow and Europe, in particular Romania. Practically the whole continent shook," Anatoly Tsygankov of the state Rosgidromet environmental monitoring service told the Interfax news agency.

However the emergencies ministry said it had called off a tsunami warning that had been issued for the Sakhalin region and added there were no reports of casualties following the quake that was measured at a magnitude of 8.2 by the USGS.
